If you’re not using hair masks yet, you will after this.
10 Hair Masks That Will Repair & Hydrate
I am a huge proponent of masks be they for my skin or hair. If you haven’t used a hair mask or are wondering why the hell you should spend your hard-earned money on them, I’ll tell you why: they’re worth it. Every penny. Much like with facial masks, hair masks are a highly-concentrated shot of nutrients to the hair. While they vary in regards to addressing specific hair needs — frizziness, volume, shine, color protection — all hair masks will help repair damaged ends and restore your hair’s natural luster and texture. Everyone can benefit from hair masks, but if you have thick, coarse and wavy hair (like me), these will be a godsend to you as they work wonders in smoothing hair.
I’ve used more than my share of hair masks over the years and have rounded up the products I always come back to in one list. Enjoy!
eSalon’s hair mask was the one that did me in. We received a gift set from the company complete with hair brush, shower cap, shampoo, conditioner, hair mask, and tons of other goodies (you’re the best, eSalon!), and LOVED every single item received. If this is your first time hearing about the LA-based company, one of the many great things they do is hair color you can customize. As for this mask, it’s great for all hair types and works wonders in soothing distressed, damaged hair. With ingredients like argan oil, hydrolyzed wheat protein and shea butter, this hair mask will leave your hair smooth, shiny and frizz-free.
This is definitely a luxury item as it’s a bit on the pricier side at $28 for an 8 oz. jar, but the results make this one of the best hair masks on this list. This mask is made with ultra-moisturizing ingredients such as sea buckthorn oil and jojoba oil to deliver intense hydration to dry, damaged and color-treated hair. After one use, my hair was smooth and weighted. Like, baby smooth with no flyaways, frizzies or anything of the such that ruins my naturally wavy hair. This product is a must-get!
From the people who brought you the cure to stretch marks comes the StriVectin Deep Repair Mask! Okay, that wasn’t the greatest introduction for a mask of this quality, but I can’t help but think back to all of the hype surrounding the StriVectin cream when it was first released. The StriVectin Deep Repair Mask is perfect for damaged or thinning hair and will not only leave your hair, but your scalp nourished. This mask comes with nourishing ingredients and ceramids, which help in restoring your hair’s natural shine, manageability and softness.
What makes papyrus milk so special and why the heck is it in this hair mask? Papyrus has been grown in the Mediterranean region for years and is used as a local, effective treatment to unruly, dull hair. Klorane uses papyrus milk to restore the hair’s fiber and provide some serious nutrition to the follicle and scalp. This is a seriously good mask from a great company.
5. Coconut Oil
Coconut oil is the OG hair mask! I’m sure you’ve heard, by now, of all the wonderful restorative and nutritive properties of coconut oil and as much as they may seem like a bunch of crap, coconut oil is actually a great cure-oil for a lot of ailments. One of these includes dry hair and skin. There are two ways to use coconut oil as a mask: before you shower or after. Depending on how dry your hair is, I would recommend massaging coconut oil into the ends of your hair and then letting that sit for a half hour before rinsing. This will work wonders in improving the manageability of your hair.
This mask was voted one of the best masks of the year which is quite the feat given its price and competition. For only $8 a jar, this mask works wonders for dry or over-processed hair. The best part about this is that a little really does go a long way, so this product will last you about 2 months or so with regular use (I would use it about 3 times a week).
Finally, a product meant for curly hair! Much like with fine, straight hair, curly hair comes with its own set of pros and cons which require its own set of products. The Ouidad Curl Recovery Repair Mask comes with patented technology that activates and restores the hair’s lipid barrier to promote healthy growth and heal damaged hair. The result is spiralized, weighted curls that retain their shape and shine. Get more information on the mask here.
Shout out to the brand I always buy at Target: OGX! Organix is a great brand that delivers high-quality products with organic ingredients at affordable prices. This deeply conditioning hair mask comes with moisturizing ingredients such as avocado oil, aloe vera and macadamia oil which, due to its high fat content, is intensely hydrating for the hair.
If you have my hair type, manageability is a BIG issue. That’s where this lifesaving mask comes in. This mask smooths the hair’s cuticle to make way for smooth, fortified and lustrous hair.
This Deep Moisture Hair Mask does tons of great things at once: intensely conditioning and moisturizing your hair, rebalancing the scalp, and strengthening and improving the hair’s elasticity. While on the pricey side, $36 for 6 oz., this mask is a perfect pick-me-up for hair that needs a little loving, especially if you style, blow dry and color it often.
If I had to choose one mask from this list, I would go with the amika Nourishing Mask that leaves you hair as soft and shiny as a satin sheet. With continued use, my hair stayed manageable, soft, naturally wavy, and smooth. It’s been a miracle cure!
