Shop For The Best Makeup Brushes Like A Pro
Shopping for the best makeup brushes can be tough – especially with all the materials, branding and options to choose from! For some, finding the perfect makeup brush is equivalent to finding the perfect foundation – it can take a long time and there will be many bumps along the road that are often characterized by receipts and returns. Heck, the lovely ladies at Sephora already know us on a first-name basis! But it’s important as important as the products you use and I promise, it’s all worth it.
What To Consider
When it comes to the best makeup brushes there are many different factors to consider before buying. There’s price range, brand, different fibers, where do we even begin?! No need to panic, the best advice I can give you when beginning your hunt is that the most expensive brand doesn’t always mean it’s the best brand. Do your research, explore your options, and be prepared for some trial and error.
The Perfect Brush
It is important to know what you will be using each brush for or what your needs are. Some fibers are better for certain things than others. It used to be that synthetic fibers tend to gravitate towards each other making them better suited for liquid or cream products, however, technological advancement already allows for high performing synthetic brushes that can mimic natural hair bristles. Unlike natural fiber brushes, synthetic fibers are not porous, which means that product won’t get trapped between your fibers and cleaning (something you should be doing, at least, once a week) will be a lot easier. The con to synthetic fiber brushes is that, over time, their bristles become stiffer and they don’t last as long as natural brushes.
Natural fiber brushes are made with animal hair such as goat, pony, squirrel, sable, etc. Squirrel hair is the most commonly used fiber for makeup brushes, but goat and pony hair brushes are better as the fibers will naturally buff and polish your skin as you’re applying your makeup. Double win! Natural fiber brushes also pick up and disperse pigment effectively and evenly because of the structure of the hair follicle, a trait that makes them the perfect choice for things like blending powders and blushers.
Natural vs Synthetic
Let’s sum up the pros and cons of synthetic fiber and natural hair makeup brushes.
Synthetic Fiber
Pros:
- Animal rights friendly, eco-friendly and sustainable
- Ideal for those with natural hair allergies
- Easy to clean
Usage:
- Eyebrows
- Eyeshadow
- Concealer
- Lip
- Eyeliner
- Powder
- Foundation
- Blush
Natural Hair
Pros:
- Absorbs product easily
- Easy to use for beginners
- Distributes product evenly
Usage:
- All kinds of powder
- Blush
- Bronzer
- Eyeshadow
Consider Shape & Size
The shape and size of the brush tip should be a key factor when picking your brushes. Large, fluffy brushes with bristles that aren’t tightly packed are best for applying powder products to larger areas of your face. Smaller, more tapered-tipped brushes are better for small areas that require precision, such as lips or the corner of your eyes. Smaller, tapered brushes are also great if you want a color to be concentrated on a certain part of your face as these brushes pick up more product than larger ones.
Best Advice: Have A Go At It:
As in different artistic endeavors, the tools used all depends on the artist. Of course, having good quality tools that perform and function exactly how you want it to would be the best makeup brush you’ll have in your kit – whether you’re going for the avant-garde look or a dainty wedding makeup look, the best advice I can give you is to test them out. Best if you have a friend who has the brush you’re eyeing, or maybe you need to get it yourself, the only time you’ll know you have the best makeup brush in hand is when you actually put it to test.

There will always be innovations when it comes to the tools we use, but there will also be brushes that you’ll love for years to come so even with all things considered, the best makeup brushes aren’t found by reading about it or thru the hype on social media, it’s found by using it and finding it perform to your liking.
