The hot new trend to make its way onto runways and into the kits of celebrity makeup artists, such as Lisa Houghton, is metallic eyeshadow! Metallic eyeshadow is perfect for summer, as it’s the easiest way to brighten and widen your eyes, while enhancing your tan and leaving you with a “barely there” look.
Metallic eyeshadows come in snowy or frosted shades in lighter hues that range from silver to plum. The lighter shades of eyeshadows often have sparklers or shimmer to give your lids a glowing, sun-kissed look. The most popular metallic eyeshadow shades are in silver, gold or bronze.
This look is perfect for every skin tone and, when done right, enhances your face’s natural glow and eye makeup, while giving you that extra bit of color without all the layers. When done incorrectly, metallic eyeshadow can look just as bad as that blue eyeshadow we rocked in the 80s.
No, ladies, whatever you hear: that was not a good look.
To ensure that you never recreate a makeup faux pas, we’ve listed easy steps to take in mind when rocking metallic eyeshadow.
How To Wear Metallic Eyeshadow
1. Know Your Shades
First, decide which look it is you’re going for – something muted and demure or bold and out-there – then look for shades that will help you nail that look. Lighter shades, such as silver, greys and bronzes are best for daytime looks as they’re softer and won’t overpower your face, while darker shades such as pinks, lilacs, greens and blues are best for nighttime makeup as they’re more pronounced and best if you want to make a statement. When it comes to lips, darker shades such as plum will complement lighter eyeshadows like gold and bronze, whereas a nude rosey lip goes best with darker-tinted eyes.
Primer is important in every makeup look, but even more so when it comes to metallic eyeshadows. Primer will not only put your eyeshadow in its place (and keep it there), but will enhance the vibrancy of your shadow shade. We recommend this classic makeup essential: Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion.
3. Choose Two Shades – No More and No Less
Metallic eyeshadows are already so pronounced, you don’t need 4 eyeshadows to create a complete look. When it comes to these hues, it’s best to stick to two colors at most, as any more than that can make you look overdone. The whole point of metallic eyeshadows, especially the lighter shades, is to give you a glowing, less-is-more look. If mixing eyeshadows, choose shades that have a smooth metallic sheen to them, instead of ones that are primarily glitter.
4. Neutral Shades Might Be Your Next Best Friend
If metallic eyeshadows are going to be your next signature look, invest in some neutral shades that complement your skin tone and will help neutralize the vibrancy of your eyeshadows. Metallic can be such a bold look, that if intending to use it for everyday wear, will benefit greatly from the balance your neutral eyeshadow will bring.
5. Use A Brush
Matte eyeshadows can afford to be blended in with your finger. Metallic eyeshadows, on the other hand, can not. In order to blend them correctly, we recommend using a brush as your fingers can create an uneven effect that will not look good with all that shimmer you got going on. You can use a regular eyeshadow brush or a concealer one; when applying, swirl the brush in your eyeshadow and tap off the excess to ensure an even blend and coat. Using a brush will also ensure no eyeshadow falls off your lids and onto other parts of your face.
6. Keep It On Your Lids
Last, but not least, another helpful tip to keep in mind if rocking metallic eyeshadows is to keep the color on your lid only as it will highlight any fine lines and wrinkles in your crease and up, thereby affecting your overall look. We like getting nuts, but let’s not get too nuts.
