DIY Setting Spray Perfect To Make Your Makeup Last

DIY setting spray

September 12, 2017 By Karen Lang Leave a Comment

I love me some DIY and I can’t wait to try out this easy DIY setting spray formula.

Easy DIY Setting Spray For Everyday Use

I don’t know if you’ve ever found your setting spray necessary and expensive because I have, I even have it in my travel kit for a quick spritz in the middle of the day. I use it on myself and I use it on clients. I’m telling you–it can really take a chunk off my wallet. So when I found this DIY setting spray tutorial by IvyMUA I couldn’t help but feel grateful. Now I’m sharing it with you so we can all create our own!

What You’ll Need:

  • Distilled Water
  • 100% Glycerin
  • Toner
  • Empty Spray Bottle

Step 1: Glycerin Drops

|

As with all DIY skin formulas, you need to figure out what’s best for your skin chemistry, in this tutorial IvyMUA demonstrates that her skin formula is about 10-15 drops of Glycerin on a 100 ml bottle. Using a dropper she transfers the Glycerin inside the empty spray bottle.

Glycerin is a humectant meaning it sucks in moisture from the surrounding environment, so the more glycerin you put the dewier the finish will be so if you have oily skin you will probably need less glycerin.

With that said, glycerin being a humectant also means that it can pull moisture from your tissues or skin, in this case, and can cause drying out of the skin as well if it can’t pull moisture out from other sources. So make sure you use water with it, lest you get inspired to play around with glycerin.

Step 2: Water + Tone

The next thing to do is to pour water in the mix, about halfway through and shake. Now a lot of people will leave it like this and use it but IvyMUA’s recipe includes toner, which makes so much sense for an added layer of skin care on your setting spray.

Especially for toners that help with minimizing the pores on your face or minimizing shine, the little addition to the mix will help greatly to create a DIY setting spray that not only works but also adds value to your skin care.

Step 3: Store in Empty Bottles

You don’t even have to buy new spray bottles, just use empty ones like an old MAC Fix+ spray bottle, which by the way are awesome spray bottles.

Toners You Can Use:

So I know some of you might be wondering what toners you can use for your DIY setting spray and I have some suggestions for that as well.

1. Rose Water Toner

Rose water has anti-inflammatory properties that can help calm acne, eczema, and irritated skin. This is widely used in middle eastern countries and has proven to be effective in doing just that. Including this in your setting spray may help calm your skin if you have any of these skin aberrations.

2. Aloe Vera Toner

Aloe Vera has moisturizing properties that will help greatly with dry skin, so if you are a bit on the drier side of the spectrum, adding an aloe vera toner to your DIY setting spray may add another layer of moisturizing properties to your formula.

3. Glycolic Acid Toners

Glycolic acid is known for its exfoliating benefits and its anti-aging characteristics which is why a lot of toners have glycolic acid in their ingredients. If you are a bit worried of your fine lines, incorporating this in your DIY setting spray may help with reducing wrinkles and promoting healthy skin.

So now that you know you don’t need to cut a chunk off of your budget for setting sprays, are you going to start mixing your own? For me, it’s a resounding yes! Because it’s for both personal use and for my kit! Who knows, I might I actually stick with it.

Do you have any other suggestions for toners you can use with DIY setting sprays? Sound off in the comments section below and in case you were wondering why you need setting sprays in your life, read it here.
