How To Apply Makeup For Oily Skin
Summer is about having fun in the sun. But let’s be honest here, even if it’s scorching hot, women still prefer to wear makeup. In fact, women with oily skin have it harder in the summertime. Thankfully, we’ve found a sweatproof makeup routine for women with oily skin. Learning how to apply makeup with this routine will help your makeup stay in place all day long, regardless of the weather.
- Wearable summer makeup for oily skin
To pull off a shine-free and sweatproof look this summer, you must prep your oily skin properly before focusing on how to apply makeup. Here’s how:
Step 1: Clean and Exfoliate
You want to apply your makeup on a smooth a canvas as possible as this helps foolproof the application process.
- Clean and exfoliate the face to remove dead skin cells
You can mix sea salt and powdered charcoal with your face cleanser for a deeper exfoliation. (Looking for a DIY charcoal soap recipe? Click here.) Wash your face gently with the mixture.

Step 2: Moisturize
After washing your face, apply a moisturizer right away. If you can, pick a moisturizer with SPF for added sun protection.
- Use moisturizer with SPF
Step 3: Mattify Your Skin
YouTube beauty guru Ingrid Nilsen recommends L’Occitane’s Ultra Matte Fluid for women with oily skin. This product helps mattify the skin which helps in holding makeup in place all day. Apply a few drops on the face and spread evenly with your fingers.
- Mattify the skin to be shine-free
Step 4: Prime your skin
Use a face primer. Primers help smooth out the skin so that it’s easier to achieve a flawless finish. There are primers that also help minimize pores. We recommend Tarte’s Clean Slate Poreless 12-Hr Perfecting Primer.
- Minimize pores and create a smooth canvas with a face primer
Step 5: Use a setting spray
Use a setting spray after you apply the primer. This will ensure the makeup sticks to the skin. Women with oily skin tend to suffer from melting or smudging makeup.
- Use a setting spray so makeup can stay longer
Step 6: Apply eye primer
The last step of prepping the skin is to apply eye primer under the eyes. This will help the concealer and base makeup adhere to the skin better.
- Use eye primer on the eyes to help tone down puffy eyes
Step 7: BB cream
Now it’s time to apply your makeup. You can start with a BB cream. The reason why you’d want to use a BB cream is because of its SPF and ability to make your skin tone even. On top of that, BB creams are easily blendable so you can apply more makeup on top of it without caking. Our favorite BB cream is Garnier Skin Perfector BB Cream For Oily/Combo Skin.
- Use BB cream after the primer as this is blendable with foundation
Step 8: Conceal & Cover
Apply a light coverage concealer under the eyes.
- Use a light coverage concealer for under the eyes
Step 9: Set your BB cream
Use the setting spray again to set the BB cream and concealer before moving forward.
- Lock makeup in place with a setting spray
Step 10: Apply your foundation
Apply foundation evenly on your face. If you can, use airbrush foundation instead due to its finish. An airbrush finish is more matte than shiny or glossy.
- Apply foundation to ensure full coverage
Step 11: Define your brows
Work on your brow game. Fill in your brows with a pencil and then finish up with a brow gel to add color and definition.
- Define your eyebrows as it will frame your eyes
Step 12: Eyeshadow prep
Apply lid primer to prepare the eyes for eyeshadow. Eyeshadow primers will help keep eye color in place longer so you don’t need to retouch frequently.

Step 13

Step 19
Using the same shimmer eyeshadow you used, use the lightest shade to highlight the cheekbones and the arch of the eyebrows.
- Highlight to define the face more
Step 20: Don’t forget your bronzer
For any summer look, this step is very important. Use a bronzer and dab on the outer edges of the face. You can also dab some on your T-zone and cheeks. Summer is all about looking like a bronze goddess, so use as much as looks good.
