MUA Tips: How to do a Smokey Eye
Smokey eyes are timelessly sexy. But its not very easy to achieve; it does require a bit of patience but once you get this look down it will be well worth it!
Smokey eye look can be really dramatic but it’s not just for nighttime, the look can be worn during the day depending on how dark you choose to go.
You can start with a natural smokey eye during the day and just add darker colors to make it more dramatic for night time – perfect for a night out with the girls! There are plenty of techniques to achieve this kind of makeup, so let’s begin, shall we?
Using an eyeshadow primer is a must! Primers like Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion makes the eyeshadow last long and really makes the color pop. You can either use a flat shader brush or your fingertips. Just don’t forget to set it with a matte nude shade of eyeshadow with a large fluffy brush to avoid creasing.
When you choose your smokey eye makeup colors, avoid the ones that are too shiny because they tend to distract the attention from your face. Opt for the usual black and gray combination, or you can use 2 (or even 3) various similar shades of eyeshadows. Choose one light, one dark and shade that’s in between the two. This middle shade will be your transition between the light and dark shades.
Now take the middle shade with a flat shader brush and apply it on the center of your lid over the eyeshadow primer. And if you’re wearing during the day, don’t pack the color that much.
Use a fluffy blending brush to pack on the darkest shade of eyeshadow and go in a V shape on the outer corner of your eyes. Don’t forget to blend it our along the crease as well.
Apply the lightest shade on the inner corner of your eyes and brow bone area to highlight.
You can either use the middle or darkest shade; or both to smudge it on the lower lash line to balance the intensity. Then line your waterline with a black eyeliner pencil for a dramatic smokey look, or you can use a nude eyeliner to make your eyes pop for a daytime look. Also, with a thin eyeliner brush, apply a thin layer of gel or liquid black eyeliner on the lash line.
Finish off your smokey eyes by using dramatic false eyelashes for night time look. But if you don’t have falsies or you haven’t mastered the technique yet, you can coat your lashes using a mascara. Don’t forget to curl it up with an eyelash curler.
And there you have it! A smoldering stare in no time.
