When you want to make sure that your mascara is made only with the best ingredients, then you have to make your own homemade mascara. You’d be surprised to see how easy it is!
Homemade Mascara Made from Natural Ingredients Tutorial
Truth is, it’s not just about making sure that what you put on your lashes are quality and healthy ingredients. Making your own homemade mascara can really help save you money, especially if you wear it every day. As you may know by now, mascara tends to dry up fast and will need to be replaced every six months regardless if you’ve used it up or not. So instead of buying new mascara tubes, you can easily make them at home at a fraction of the cost. Here’s how you can make your own homemade mascara made with natural ingredients only.
What You’ll Need:
- 1 tsp coconut oil
- 1 tsp vitamin e oil
- 1/2 tsp soy wax or beeswax
- 3-4 tsp aloe vera gel
- 3 capsules activated charcoal
- New or recycled mascara tube
- Small plastic bag
Step 1: Clean the mascara tube.
If you bought a new mascara tube, then you can skip this step. But for those who plan to recycle or reuse their old mascara tubes (I highly encourage you to do this!), you need to clean it thoroughly.
You can use baby shampoo to clean the mascara wand and tube as this has a gentle formula. Start with the wand and work your way inside the mascara tube. To make sure you clean the inside of the tube properly, put the wand in and out of the tube repeatedly. Only use the tube once it is clear and there’s no mascara residue left.
Step 2: Mix ingredients together in a bowl.
In a bowl, mix together the 1 tsp coconut oil, 1 tsp vitamin e oil, and 1/2 tsp soy wax or beeswax.
Step 3: Melt the ingredients together.
If you have a double broiler at home, use that to melt the ingredients together. On the other hand, you can also just do a DIY double broiler. In another bowl, pour hot water and then mount the bowl with the mixture just above the water.
Wait for the mixture to melt. There’s no need to mix.
Step 4: Add the aloe vera gel.
Add the 3-4 tsp aloe vera gel into the mixture. Mix thoroughly.
Step 5: Add the activated charcoal.
Break the three capsules of activated charcoal and put content into the mixture. Mix thoroughly.
Step 6: Make a plastic piping bag.
Take a small plastic bag and cut a tiny hole. You will transfer the mixture using the plastic bag, like an icing piping bag.
Step 7: Transfer mixture into the tube.
Carefully transfer the mixture into the plastic bag.
Once you’ve transferred everything, you can now transfer the homemade mascara into the tube. Just squeeze the plastic piping bag gently to avoid it from bursting. If it feels like the mascara mixture isn’t going inside, you can stop the transfer and push the mixture with the wand. Now that there’s more space, you can start transferring again.
And there you have it… your own natural homemade mascara!

Are you attached to your mascara like I am? As I’ve said time and again, I can go outside without foundation or eyeliner, but never mascara! It’s a great way to brighten up the eyes and I love looking at my long curled lashes. Just like you (probably), I have a mascara that dried up already even without using the entire content…which is surely a waste. I’m fortunate that I came across this homemade mascara tutorial because it will definitely help save me some cash. Most importantly, it’s completely natural! So if you have time this weekend, please make your own mascara–your lashes will thank you for it!
