How To Make Your Lipstick Last All Day

Feature | How To Make Your Lipstick Last All Day

March 28, 2020 By Lea Yu 6 Comments

Have you ever wondered how to make your lipstick last all day and not wind up with that terrible faded lip line? Don’t fret over faded lipstick − I’ll show you how to make the most out of your lipsticks which don’t seem to…well, stick. Fortunately, there are a few things you can do at home to help your lipstick last all day. Drum roll, please − get ready for some of the easiest and most useful tips and tricks to help lipstick stay on longer! Check out these helpful hints to make your lipstick last all day even after dinner, drinks, and dancing!

How to Make Your Lipstick Last All Day and Night!

Step 1. Get A Matte Lipstick

For a long-lasting lipstick, it’s essential to use a matte lipstick. Lipsticks with matte finishes are dryer than other types, so proper moisturization (more on that below) is important. But they’re pretty much necessary unless you want to be reapplying every three hours.

This is because matte lipsticks have a base of sticky wax instead of the slippery oil that is found in most lipsticks.

The shortest-lasting lipsticks are the ones that are creamy and do not have matte finishes. Stay away.

Step 2. Exfoliate

Did you know that simply exfoliating your lips could help make your lipstick application much more effective? All you need is a soft baby toothbrush and some lip scrub, and you’re good to go. No need for anything fancy. Grab your good old toothbrush and scrub those lips to say goodbye to dry or chapped lips.

Step 3. Moisturize with Lip Balm

|

Before you put any product on your face, right after you clean or wash your face, apply a layer lip balm on your lips. This will give you time to boost your lips’ moisture and elasticity, which will help the lipstick to “soak” into your lips. Applying lip balm also protects your lips after exfoliating and prevents the lipstick from flaking. Remember to stay away from lip balms with alcohol, flavors, and fragrance as this will dry out your lips more.

Note that there are lots of lipstick varieties that claim to be moisturizing. And most of them follow through on that claim. But although those types do work well as moisturizers, I’ve found they tend to last a much shorter time than the dryer kinds. So to keep your lipstick from fading all day, you’ll have to moisturize BEFORE applying the lipstick.

Step 4. Apply Lip Liner

|

If you want to make your lipstick last all day, line your lips first. Pick a lip liner shade closest to the shade of your lips. Don’t stop at the outer corners − it is also a good idea to fill your lips in a little, making the liner act as a sort of primer. Use a lip brush to blend the lip liner color in for even coverage.

Step 5. Apply First Layer Lipstick

|

Next is to take out a long wear lipstick or any lipstick of your choice and use the same lip brush you used with the lip liner to apply the first layer. Swipe on a small amount of the lipstick at a time. You don’t want an overly generous application, or it will only come off.

If you’re in a hurry, you can blend the lipstick with your finger after you dab it on. Blending the lipstick “into” your lips helps create a stain that will last longer.

Step 6. Blot

|

This is a MUST to remove excess oil from the first layer of your lipstick and to keep lipstick on longer! Notice how some tissue paper come in 2- or 3-ply? Separate the layers and get a thin single piece of the tissue layer. Use this single ply to blot your lips.

I’d recommend blotting twice to help work the lipstick into your lips.

Step 7. Powder

|

You can also do the powder trick! Here’s how to make lipstick last longer using powder. Stick a thin or a one-ply tissue to your lips. With a big fluffy makeup brush, take any loose powder and dab your makeup brush in it. Now pat on the powder over the tissue on your lips. This will help take out the excess oil from your lips, giving you a clean finish and long-wearing lipstick.

Step 8. Apply the Second Layer

[instagram url=https://www.instagram.com/p/BoYlJtKF-yC/ hidecaption=true width=625] We are not done yet. Apply a second coating directly from the tube for full IMPACT! Remember not to overdo it or you’ll ruin your whole lip look and have to start over.

After re-applying, remember to blot again with a single ply of tissue paper.

Step 9. Clean Your Edges with Concealer!

|

Finally, tidy up the edges and you’re good to go! To do this, use a concealer and work on the areas with rough edges or where you may have gone over the line. By applying the lip liner first and creating your base with it, cleaning up after will be much easier.

Makeup and Lipstick Ideas:

  • You’re good to go with a lip liner and one layer of lipstick for day wear (steps 1 through 6).
  • Go on and complete steps 1 through 8 if you’re going out to an event or a night out for long-lasting lipstick.
