April 6, 2020 By Karen Lang Leave a Comment

Have you always wanted to learn how to contour your eyes? There’s no better time to learn than now! Check out our guide on eye contouring for the different eye shapes.

How To Contour Your Eyes According To Your Eye Shape

Contouring isn’t for just getting that chiseled Kim K. cheekbone. It can be used to enhance our cleavage, shape our jawline and recreate our eye shape! Eye contouring is using makeup to change or enhance our natural eye shape and, if you have downturned, monolid, or small eyes, this will be your next favorite beauty hack. You’ll learn how to contour your eyes and look more fabulous! Check out the infographic below:

We can thank Makeup.com for this informative infographic that will really help tons of makeup lovers out there!

How To Contour Your Eyes | For Different Eye Shapes

What is your eye shape? If you’re still unsure, you can check out the photos below to better determine what eye shape you have and follow the appropriate eye contouring instructions.

1. Round Eyes | How to Contour Your Eyes

Women with round eyes have big and wide eyes. Hence, your contouring goal would be to narrow the shape of the eyes. Do this by applying medium to dark shades to the center of the eyes, and then use light shades to highlight the corners. Using a matte eyeshadow is preferred. Additionally, you’d also want to put eyeliner along the waterline as this can help make the eyes look smaller too.

2. Almond Eyes | How to Contour Your Eyes

If you have almond eyes, you’re one lucky gal. Thi is the eye shape that’s easiest to contour. So just use a medium shade eyeshadow like matte brown or matte gray on the lids. For the outer crease, use a darker shade. Make sure you blend the shadows properly so that the color transition is smooth. This contouring technique will help make your almond eyes look prettier and stand out.

3. Monolid Eyes | How to Contour Your Eyes

For women with monolid eyes, you deal with a tight, single lid. It can be a challenge to work with if you don’t know the right contouring technique. So, what you’d want to achieve is a gradient effect on your lids through blending different types of eyeshadow together. Start with a darker shade close to your lash line, then use a netural shade at the center of the lid. Complete the look with shimmer shadow under the eyebrows. This will help make your eyes look bigger and brighter.

4. Hooded Eyes | How to Contour Your Eyes

With hooded eyes, the lid is actually covered when the eyes are open so you’d want to find more space on the lid to work with and enhance the eye shape as much as you can. Start by lightly patting a matte brown eyeshadow on the eyelid. Please do make sure that you pat lightly to avoid making the lids appear too heavy. Next, highlight the inner corner of the eyes as we all as the brow bone. If you think that’s not enough, you can line the waterline too. For hooded eyes, it’s ideal to keep your brows well-groomed all the time so that you’ll have enough space to work with.

I love eyeshadow palettes with neutral, plum and orange shades like these ones!

5. Small Eyes | How to Contour Your Eyes

For small eyes, obviously, you’d want to make them look bigger but not overwhelming. It’s best to stick to light to medium shades for the lids because dark shades will look heavy on the eyes. You must go easy on the eyeliner and mascara as well. We suggest that you go for soft grey or bronze. Light smokey eyes will look great on small eyes. Additionally, you can also use a light shadow on the lower lash line to make the eyes look bigger.

6. Protruding Eyes | How to Contour Your Eyes

For those with protruding or prominent eyes, the goal is to enhance the eyes but without making it look bigger. On the lids, go for medium to dark shades. Start by applying an eyeshadow base and then using a shimmery eyeshadow on the lids. Contour the crease using a darker eyeshadow. Finish off with lining the waterline. Please avoid light eyeshadow as this will only make the eyes look bigger.

7. Downturned Eyes | How to Contour Your Eyes

Women with downturned eyes, your goal is to make your eyes look lifted. How can you achieve that look? You can use a shimmer white or pink eyeshadow on the inner crease and then use a medium gold or brown shade at the center of the lids. On the outer corners, use a darker shade as this will help give the eyes a lifted look. By now, you already have a smokey gradient eye makeup, so make sure you blend thoroughly. Moreover, eyeliner will be very helpful for you. Just like the upper lashline and create a small wing.

8. Upturned Eyes | How to Contour Your Eyes

If you have upturned yes, you just want to achieve balance. Use dark eyeshadow on the lower outer corner of the eyes. That will instantly lower down the eyes and help balance out the shape. On the lids, use a medium eyeshadow. You can use the same eyeshadow along your lower lash line. Don’t forget to highlight the brow bone. You might also want to add a winged eyeliner if you want to accentuate your eye shape.
