How To Cover Up Rosacea With Makeup Perfectly

Struggling with covering up rosacea with makeup? You’ve come to the right place! It’s actually simple and easy – as easy as 1, 2, full coverage!

I understand your struggle as I’m in a bout with redness and sensitive skin myself. But fret not! (Seriously because stress may worsen the symptoms!) There is a way to cover rosacea with makeup without worsening your flare ups.

How to Apply Makeup for Rosacea:

  1. Gently tap on a thin layer of primer to prevent further irritation on your skin. You may use your fingers or your beautyblender – anything that will help you get gentle application. When applying makeup on skin with rosacea, you’ll want to be extra careful not to cause further irritation so do what works for you.
  2. Use a damp beautyblender to apply green tinted color corrector over the area with redness. The green tint naturally neutralizes redness, but easily blends with your foundation makeup. Take advantage of the rounded shape of the beautyblender to roll on your color corrector delicately. However if your flare up isn’t too bad, feel free to skip this step.
  3. Apply a full coverage foundation with the same beautyblender. Steer clear of mattifying or matte foundations since anything drying may worsen your rosacea. A foundation with a slightly yellow hue will also help cover up some redness.
  4. Dot on some concealer on your under eye area and areas that may need a little bit more coverage. If you pile on your foundation earlier on in an attempt to cover it up, you may only end up with cakey complexion makeup. So instead use concealer to achieve full coverage over your redness.
  5. Set with a little bit of setting powder strategically in areas you produce the most oil. Dry skin types typically won’t need powder as it may be drying, so apply it strategically in select areas where you think you need it. And maintain a light hand while you’re at it!
  6. We removed the redness, but it’s great to bring back warm to your complexion. Steer clear of red shades, opting instead for brown or peach tones. This will appear as a natural flush without highlighting your rosacea. Dust bronzer on the outer parameter of your face with a soft, fluffy brush. Apply a coral or warm orange shade high on your cheek bones. If you typically get red on your cheeks, avoid putting on blush on that area.
  7. Finally apply a hydrating setting spray on your face. This will work twice as hard for you, refreshing and hydrating your skin, and fixing and setting your makeup for all day gorgeous makeup!

How to Cover up Rosacea | Skin Care

Makeup can only do so much. There are other things you can do to help control your rosacea so that you’ll look fantastic even without makeup.

This may take a long process of trial and error, but finding a skincare routine that works for you may help you calm your flare ups. Even better, you may have to rely less on makeup to cover redness over time.

  1. Gentle Cleanser – Opt for a mild cleanser with soothing and hydrating ingredients. Using cleansers that strip you of your natural oils may worsen your redness, irritating your skin further.
  2. Soothing Moisturizer – Keep your skin hydrated and calm with ingredients like chamomile, oatmeal, or green tea.
  3. Sunscreen – Apply sunscreen before heading out and reapply every two hours. The sun can exacerbate your rosacea and may stretch out the healing process.

Moisturizer and sunscreen are skincare heroes that you can apply repeatedly throughout the day. Rosacea skin is typically dry and both moisturizer and sunscreen can help alleviate symptoms of dryness and dehydration.

Keep small tubes in your bag. If you experience flare ups in the middle of the day, you’ll have these two handy products to help you out!

Skin Care and Makeup Ingredients to Avoid Rosacea Flare Ups

It’s important to be especially picky with your skincare and makeup when you have rosacea. Choose skincare with skin-loving ingredients and most of all, steer clear of the irritating ingredients below.

  1. Parabens/fragrances
  2. Sodium laurel sulfate
  3. Essential oils
  4. Alcohol (typically acts as a preservative for cosmetics)

You may react to some of the ingredients, but completely fine with others. More than researching ingredient lists, it’s important to take into consideration how brands formulate or blend the ingredients.

Brands list ingredients beginning with the most dominant ingredient. If there is an ingredient you are intolerant to and it’s one of the first items on the list, make a hard pass!

Other Factors That Might Cause Flare Ups

Your skin may look on fleek with your complexion perfecting makeup (you’re welcome!) on, but red and blotchy once you remove it.

Sad to say but there are some environmental factors that you also need to take into consideration. Let’s control your flare ups with skin care and mask them with makeup, but it may go to waste unless you take the items below into consideration. Avoid them as much as possible.

  1. Hot food and drinks
  2. Alcohol
  3. Spicy food
  4. Dairy (causes inflammation)
  5. Caffeine
  6. Exercise
  7. Other foods that contain cinnamaldehyde
  8. Emotional stress
  9. Sun exposure (wear SPF!)
  10. Extremely hot or cold temperatures

You can have your cake and eat it too! But there’s nothing cakey about your perfected complexion with this rosacea makeup tutorial.

There’s no shame in having rosacea. But if you’re struggling with managing your flare ups and covering it up, I hope this helps bring your confidence back! After all makeup is about highlighting your best features, not hiding you away.
