9 Ways to Minimize Large Pores

January 6, 2025 By A Hainute Moderne

‘Large pores, be gone!’ If only it was that easy!

But don’t despair. We’ve found some simple ways to minimize those large, unsightly pores and create a more beautiful skin.

Drum roll, please!

9 Ways to Minimize Large Pores

Both men and women suffer from annoying skin problems such as oily skin, black/white heads and enlarged pores.

But how do these pores become enlarged in the first place? The problems arise when your oil glands produce too much oil, which when mixed sweat, makeup with other substances caused the pores to become clogged. Clopped pores, means enlarged pores, it’s as simple as that!

So what can you do about it?

What to Do & What to Avoid

1. Stop using skin care products that clog pores or cause your oil glands to produce more oil. Avoid products that are too emollient (meaning thick or greasy creams) or products with a creamy texture. If you have oily skin, creamy, emollient skin-care products will result in clogged pores.

2. Avoid products with drying, irritating ingredients. Irritating products stimulate more oil production directly in the pore.

3. Use only gentle, water-soluble cleansers and avoid bar soaps. Never use drying cleansers since it’ll hurt the skin’s natural property. If a cleanser causes irritation, it can stimulate more oil production. And bar soaps? Try to avoid using them in your face! Look for a cleanser with exfoliation action and oil control function. Try Olay Pore Minimizing Cleanser + Scrub.

4.  Clear pores by exfoliation. Use a pore minimizing product that gently exfoliates not only skin’s surface but also inside the pores to clear away excessive sebum and debris. Try  Paula’s Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA (salicylic acid) Liquid Exfoliant.

5. Improve cell production to help the pore function more normally. Prescribed Retinoids, such as Retin-A, Tazorac, Avita, Renova, and Differin can be effective for all skin types.

Retin-A, Renova, and Differin have positive effects on the way pores function, and you should consider these products for very stubborn cases or when blackheads are accompanied by breakouts.

Retinoids have anti-aging benefits, too, so they’re great for those struggling with blackheads, large pores, and wrinkles.

6. Use products loaded with antioxidants and cell-communicating ingredients to help heal skin and reduce wrinkles. Practice reading the content of the product that you’re using but the trick for those with blackheads and large pores is to use only products that are gel based, liquid, or a very thin serum . A well-formulated toner may be all you need twice a day to take care of this need.

7. Be careful about the makeup you use and be sure to get it all off at night. If you’re using thick, heavy makeup to cover red marks and other blemishes, be aware that the texture of such cosmetics can make the matters worse. Make sure to remove your makeup before going to bed. Unable to do so can make clogged pores worse, increase blackheads and white bumps, and lead to dull-looking skin. Do you want that to happen to you?

8. Female? Depending on your age and health, talk to you doctor about birth control pills. For women whose pore problems arise from oily skin, a low-dose birth control pills may be an option to reduce the hormone levels that create excess oil – the root of the problem. Men can ask their physicians for a blood test to check their testosterone levels and ensure their range is within the normal limits.

9. Make a Homemade Pore-Tightening Mask.  Treat yourself to a pore-purifying facial at least twice a week. You can just make your own mask in the comfort of your home.
