Fishtail Braid | Hair Tutorial

November 23, 2019 By Liv Van D

Do you want to know how to create a quick and simple fishtail braid?

Let us show you how! Braids have really made a comeback in a big way, with all sorts of new styles to try. The great thing about braids is, they offer intricate styles without the damaging heat of an iron or chemicals. So keep those tresses long and strong and get your fishtail braid on!

Fishtail Braid | Hair Tutorial

Supplies for your own fishtail braid:

  • Comb
  • Hairtie

You can use a brush and a hair tie if you’d like.

Step 1: Prep the locks.

You will begin any hairstyle by ensuring your hair is tangle free by combing it out. Fishtail braids can be difficult to make look neat with curly hair, so pre-straighten curls. If the hair is dry and has a lot of fly-aways, you might want to work a small amount of smoothing serum through the locks.

Make sure the hair is smooth and frizz free.

Step 2: Sectioning.

Decide what area you would like the braid, and section the hair into 2 equal parts.

For this example, we will be creating one large fishtail braid.

Step 3: Beginning the braid.

Gather a small piece of hair from the outside of one section, and cross it over to the center of the opposing section.  Be certain to use SMALL sections of hair, too large and it will look like a standard 3 strand braid.

Add the small section to the inside of the opposite half.

Step 4: And again, and again, and again.

Repeat step 3 on the opposite side, and repeat! Really, it’s that simple.

And add it to the inside of the opposite section, you will see x’s being formed.

By now, you’ve got the idea.

Step 5: Tie it off.

Once you have reached the point at which you’d like to end the braid, simply tie off with a hair elastic.

Tie off the hair to secure.

See, fishtail braids are much simpler than you might have originally thought!  And with practice, this braid will take you no time at all. Enjoy your fabulous new look and in no time you will be able to fishtail as fast as a regular braid.
